Re: The male inhabitants of Gennesaret or its people?

Recently I read J esus and the Urban Culture of Galilee , chapter 9 (p. 183-207) of Séan Freyne’s Galilee and Gospel: Collected Essays . This essay paints the rapidly changing social situation in Galilee during the first century CE, and the decline of a supportive agricultural system in particular. ...

I see a similar incapacity of the hand in an atmosphere of violence.

I don’t believe that the ‘withered hand’ pericope in the synoptics is a fulfillment story of 1 Kings 1-10. The elements of the two stories are too different.

Does ‘The man with the withered hand’ (Mk 3:1-6) discuss the issue of warfare on the Sabbath?

Over the centuries the issue of warfare on the Sabbath has been important in ancient Judaism. After a major carnage of non-resisting Jews on a Sabbath during the Maccabean revolt, Mattathias and his companions decided to avoid similar major bloodshed in the future. 1 Maccabees 2:41 describes this re...

Re: ‘Eternal life’: the theologizing mistranslation of a political notion

John 3: 1 - 5 (RSV): [1] Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicode'mus, a ruler of the Jews. [2] This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him." [3] Jesus an...

Re: ‘Eternal life’: the theologizing mistranslation of a political notion

Matthew 19: 16 - 22 (RSV, amended as suggested): [16]And behold, one came up to him, saying, "Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have Life of the Age ?" [17] And he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the comm...

‘Eternal life’: the theologizing mistranslation of a political notion

In the New Testament the ζωή αἰώνιος notion frequently occurs. Literally ζωή αἰώνιος means ‘life of the age’, but it is consistently translated as ‘eternal life’, which is clearly not a literal translation. Below I will try to show that ‘eternal life’ is a theologizing mistranslation of a political ...

Re: Revealing the son in Paul (Galatians 1:16)

DCH, a small reply to your last contribution 1. The Essenes and prophecy For the Essenes, who produced Christianity and the New Testament, the prophetic era had not ended yet, and prominent Essenes were seen or saw themselves as prophets. Josephus War II:159 (on the Essenes): Some of them claim to f...

Re: Revealing the son in Paul (Galatians 1:16)

My research has shown that Jesus was active during the war against the Romans 66-70 CE. Therefore Paul’s activity was entirely pre-Jesus, and the mission he designed for himself was to preach the future Christ to the gentiles. From verse 6 on, Galatians 1 is totally about Christ except one ‘Jesus’ m...

Re: The Roman civil war 68-69 CE and Nero’s suicide in Luke 11:17-18a

I assume you're just floating an idea and looking for feedback rather than actually positing this as Luke's intended meaning of the text. If that's the case, it seems to me that you are reading far more into the text than it can sustain. I guess the major problem I see is that your exegesis is unde...

Re: Paul without Christ? Impossible!!

I wouldn't deny that it was still new and rough around the edges. But for those 5 letters generally considered to be authentic and addressed to his communities, I’m asking for a couple of examples (or even one example) of “segments” between letters where the doctrines about Christ are incoherent an...
