Re: Picturing the competing grand views of Christian origins

The first is quite ancient, going back to the mid-to-late second century struggle to define Catholic Christianity over against the schools (“heresies”) that were generally characterized as Gnostic. It continues to find adherents and can be considered the most popular metanarrative. ... The other is...

Bernard wrote:Kapyong, what do you mean by ABE?
What do you think is a reasonably plausible explanation?
Bernard, Kapyong was copying a bit of text from the old forum at BC&H. ABE is/was one of the anonymous posters there.

He was/is a staunch defender of Bart Ehrman.

Re: Nailed: 10 Christian myths that show Jesus never existed

Santa Claus also has aquired supernatural dimensions, i.e., able to fly around the world in one night, climb down chimneys, steer flying reindeers, etc. Does that mean that their is no historical person behind this "mythical" person? Hi arnoldo, Is there an historical person behind Superm...

Re: Picturing the competing grand views of Christian origins

Thank you Peter, this is both informative, and provocative, a worthwhile summary. In my opinion, your time line graph would be even more persuasive, and useful, were you to superimpose upon it, perhaps with a second colored bar beneath the time line itself, the three or four or five most significant...

Re: Nailed: 10 Christian myths that show Jesus never existed

It is quite possible that later writers with the advantage of hindsight made the crossing much more significant than it appeared to be at the time. Thanks, Andrew, as always, very perceptive. I think you will agree with me, however, that Julius Caesar was not universally loved or respected, at the ...

Re: Good Post on Acts at Vridar

Has anyone made a list of all the critical attestations (with respect to the HISTORY of both the orthodoxy and the heretics) found in the source known as "Irenaeus" that underpin many elements of mainstream "learning"? And is it even remotely possible that "Irenaeus of LYON...

Re: Census of Roman citizens under Augustus

I just think the conventional view (that Luke used the census of Qurinius as a plot contrivance to get Mary down from Galilee so she could push that baby out where she was supposed to) is pretty solid here, and there really is no reason to assume that Luke meant to imply anything more than what he ...

Thanks very much, MrMacSon, for the link to that most interesting Ph.D. dissertation from Notre Dame. Hot stuff.... Well, I think there's a lot of meat and potatoes in that thesis, I will need a couple weeks to digest it all. One quick question: I did not search the references, but did this newest d...

Re: P45 does not contain χριστιανος

24 hours ago, I posted a question, to the forum, which, as far as I can determine, has not yet been answered, either because no one cares, or, because no one knows the answer. To me it is relevant, and useful. As I explained yesterday, I am unaware of the location within P45, where one finds χριστια...

Re: the disciples were first called Chrestians (not Christia

This is a false claim. Codex Alexandrinos has the support of all manuscripts with the epsilon-iota, especially Bezae with both the Greek epsilon-iota and the Latin "i". P.45 has χριστιανος . Even Pliny's letter to Hadrian has "Christiani". This forum, and this thread in particul...
