Re: Westar finally releases Acts Seminar Report

Although knowledge of canonical Acts by the author of the Acts of Paul is IMO true, some scholars question it. Without knowledge of canonical Acts then yes the Acts of Paul would require a lost source for Paul's life. Why? I think a lot of the mythicist argument about the invention of Jesus is unte...

Re: Westar finally releases Acts Seminar Report

Either Acts is earlier or the author had other sources for Paul's life. Nonsense. Would you say the same thing about the Acts of Paul? IF the author of the Acts of Paul knew canonical Acts, then I would see no need for another source. (The author clearly knew the letters of Paul). Although knowledg...

Re: Westar finally releases Acts Seminar Report

To explore the other half of that dichotomy, what sources would he need? One possibility is that the 'we' sections of Acts are from a contemporary account of Paul's travels to which the author of Acts had access. Why is something like that needed? Because of geographical verisimilitude? Basically y...

Re: Westar finally releases Acts Seminar Report

I think it would be very difficult for a 2nd century writer to produce a account of Paul's life as plausible as the one in Acts with no other sources whatever than the letters of Paul. Either Acts is earlier or the author had other sources for Paul's life. Andrew Criddle To explore the other half o...

Re: Textual Criticism of Romans 16

chapter 15 on internal evidence is clearly Pauline. Care to elaborate on this point? Romans 15:1-13 continues the argument of chapter 14. An ending at 14:23 is far too abrupt. Romans 15:14-32 is closely related too Romans 1:8-13 in theory this could be imitation by a later writer but it would be a ...

Re: Textual Criticism of Romans 16

Andrew, you know what I am stuck on? The length of the letters and the two dimensional thinking of scholars. In a nutshell it comes down to this: 1. The letters are too long and 2. The only reason scholars accept the individual length of the Catholic epistles is because they come in a set of too lo...

Re: Textual Criticism of Romans 16

The following is based on reading Gamble's Textual History of the Letter to the Romans but on many points I differ from Gamble. I am far from certain I'm right but I think the argument is interesting. I'll present a number of claims briefly and try to expand on them in response to criticism. a/ Ther...

Re: a fragment of Papias

One possibility is that Papias on the basis of Jewish tradition, (e.g. the age at which levites entered full temple service), regarded full maturity as starting at agw thirty. Irenaeus ftom a hellenistic background regarded the age of full maturity as rather later and so misinterpreted Papias. Andre...

Re: Syriac recension of Ignatius

............................................................ So the question as always is how do you reconcile these parallels? There seems to be three schools of thought: 1. Ignore them - i.e. Roger Pearse's approach here at the forum ('it's just coincidence') 2. Argue that Peregrinus wrote the le...
