Re: Simon Gathercole: "The Historical and Human Existence of Jesus in Paul’s Letters"
I get the impression that if one can argue from Paul that Jesus was an earthly figure that Jesus was therefore a historical human. How does that follow? Was it not a truism in the ancient world that, if you wanted the best and most reliable witnesses to a man’s words, deeds, life and character, you...

Re: Simon Gathercole: "The Historical and Human Existence of Jesus in Paul’s Letters"
Does Gathercole pause to consider that JUST ABOUT ALL of this mythological language and imagery comes from LXX? Probably 90% from Isaiah 52/53, and the rest from Psalms, Genesis, Deuteronomy…?

Re: Simon Gathercole: "The Historical and Human Existence of Jesus in Paul’s Letters"
I started reading, but quickly grew impatient. There is something essentially childish on both sides of this “debate.” (I blame the likes of Carrier as much as any evangelical.) We are being asked to approach the Pauline Corpus—or rather the “undisputed epistles” within it—as though it were a collec...

Re: Klinghardt on ‘abolishing the Law & Prophets’
To put it crudely, if Klinghardt has shown that 'abolishing the law and the prophets' is unlikely to be a Marcionite addition to Luke, he has not shown that it's unlikely to be an orthodox addition to Luke. … The sequence could still be: Luke=>Western Luke=>Evangelion. (I'm not claiming to have pro...

Re: How Ancient Apocalyptic Jewish Ascent Esotericism Laid the Foundations of Christianity
An interesting book on this subject, although I haven’t looked at in it a while, is— The Jewish Apocalyptic Tradition and the Shaping of New Testament Thought , ed. Benjamin Reynolds (2017). Thank you for that recommendation. Sounds interesting :)/ Yes it is. If you get to it sometime I’d be happy ...

Re: Dualism, not ditheism, in Marcion
What was Marcion’s role during the emergence of the canonical edition [of the New Testament]? Every attempt at finding an answer is burdened by numerous uncertainties involving the sparse and in part contradictory witnesses about Marcion. Their interpretation is further complicated by Marcion’s pro...

Re: Dualism, not ditheism, in Marcion
I haven’t read this article, or Litwa’s book on the Evil Creator. But I’m not that eager. They seem to follow the same line as his book on 2nd century Christianities, which has a chapter on Marcion. Litwa is an excellent philologist. But about Marcion he adopts the dishonest, Olympian, know-it-all t...

Re: How Ancient Apocalyptic Jewish Ascent Esotericism Laid the Foundations of Christianity
Seems like Enoch is relatively neglected here for its influence on the Gospels. Or maybe just since Ben left. The video draws the line from 1 Enoch via 3 Enoch to Paul, the dating of 3 Enoch notwithstanding. An interesting book on this subject, although I haven’t looked at in it a while, is— The Je...

Re: Klinghardt on ‘abolishing the Law & Prophets’
After reviewing Klinghardt’s arguments regarding ‘abolishing the law and the prophets’ in *Ev/Luke 23.2 (OG 1.74-78; 2.1166-1175), it seems to me that Klinghardt does not really make an argument against the theory that 'and abolishing the law and our prophets’ ( et solventem legem nostram et prophe...
