Re: Spin and the DSS
[ . . . ]Maybe the Essene hypothesis is still dominant - but if Rachel Elior has anything to do with it - maybe change might be on the cards.....Elior deals with the Essenes about 50.40 mins into her talk to the University of Chicago Divinity School. I think the talk was last year. "Who Wrote ...

Re: Alexamenos graffiti
Hi pakeha, Thanks. Its always nice to get positive feedback. I have been skeptical of the Alexamenos graffiti for a few months, since reading Gunnar Samuelson's book about crucifixions and how varied the practice could be. I think reading the article in peeusmega9's opening post by L.L. Wellborn go...

Re: Alexamenos graffiti
Hi peseusomega9, In teaching "Humanities" courses for the past 15 years, I have come across dozens of cases where experts have mislabeled or misunderstood images for centuries. I will take this as another case, since you cannot provide any evidence to the contrary. Thanks. Warmly, Jay Ras...

Re: Two new articles by our pal Tim O'Neill
[ . . .] My final post on this subject. Tacitus is thought to have been 8 or 9 years old in 64 . The Great Fire must have been a very important event in the life of Rome: the suspects investigated and the culpable talked about and written about for years . The Acta Diurna was also a daily newspaper...

I'm trying to understand why TON ... I understand that . Your findings could be very helpful to the understanding of Tacitus .Please, persevere with your efforts until you succeed. Thanks for the encouragement, Beowolf; Tacitus is a fascinating person and well worth learning about. Still,...

Re: James the br of Jesus Christ, the TF, and everything
I don't think it is only a quantitative problem here, but also a qualitative one. Is it likely that Josephus identifies James by relationship to Jesus called Christ when he has not previously referred to that person with that identifier? It partly depends on what background knowledge Josephus expec...

Re: Two new articles by our pal Tim O'Neill
Keeping in mind those three devastating conflagrations I don't quite see why it's a reasonable assumption to think Tacitus had access to any possible Acta Diurna which may and I repeat MAY have possibly mentioned any particular crucifixion in Jerusalem during Pontius Plate's governorship, beowolf. ...

Re: Two new articles by our pal Tim O'Neill
That Tacitus could have made use of information no longer available to us , such as the Acta Diurna, is a very reasonable assumption. How did Tacitus learn that a Jesus had been crucified when even Christians like Luke couldn't put a date on it? How would he know where to look? What year? Were they...
