Re: Roger Waters When Jewish Pigs Fly

While I understand your broader point, this is not a great example, is it? Mark 1.2 and 1.6 are almost universally regarded as belonging to the same pericope. True. Just tried to come up fast with an example relevant for this thread about Elijah. But I think it's also the same in Mark 6, and that t...

Re: Roger Waters When Jewish Pigs Fly

This [treatment of discreet passages as "pericopes"] is the method invented by the form critics, and it is unfortunately, I think, still popular. The passages are not "pericopes", i.e. to be "cut around" and taken out of context. Then they lose their basic meaning. I t...

Re: Roger Waters When Jewish Pigs Fly

Since GMark is the original Gospel narrative which the others are based on the subsequent Gospels have relatively little evidential value other than indicating what they thought "Mark" meant. When you say "evidential value" you mean the gospels as evidence for what? My view of g...

Re: Elijah, Elisha, John, and Jesus.

Jesus is portrayed as taking over in some way from John the baptist in the gospels, and also as having received the spirit during his baptism at the Jordan. Elisha is portrayed as taking over from Elijah in the Hebrew scriptures, receiving a double portion of his spirit, also at the Jordan Indeed. ...

Re: Resurrection of the flesh AND eternal life?

Thank you very much, GakuseiDon and Iskander and Robert J. I'm looking into it. Although it is debatable whether the idea of the resurrection of the flesh appears anywhere in the NT... I'm surprised at such an idea, given the post-resurrection dining Jesus engages in, as for example in Luke 24:36-42...

Resurrection of the flesh AND eternal life?

Although it is debatable whether the idea of the resurrection of the flesh appears anywhere in the NT, it nevertheless became Christian doctrine that the resurrection to eternal life would be a resurrection of the flesh. But that logically has to mean a different kind of flesh which can last forever...

Re: The Gospel of Paul

The field of comparing Mark and Paul is actually a growing field of interest withing NT scholarship these days, I think. . The nest we can do is infer plausibility based on common oral traditions. Mark is a compilation and thus some traditions by all rights existed a long with Pauline communities e...

Re: The Gospel of Paul

In any case, the Markan and Pauline traditions a clearly distinct from the traditions of Matthew and Luke. Hey, you're welcome, JCarp, thanks for your thoughts on the subject. In volume II of Mark and Paul there is a good exposition of Volkmar's work, thoughts and theories in an article (in English...

Re: The Gospel of Paul

Volkmars work is only available in German I'm afraid, but anyway, perhaps you should also look more to the overall theology of Paul (and Mark) instead of just the Christology. In that way you'll get a fuller understanding of the texts imo, whether your interest is historical or theological or whatev...

Re: The Gospel of Paul

This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. God’s word is not chained. Therefore, I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. The gospel of God — the gospel ...
