Re: Markan Marcion: A Contrarian Synopsis
(reserved) Watch this space, I guess. I hope it's interesting. I know from personal experience that can be difficult to tell if anyone, other than one's immediate dialogue partners/adversaries are reading or trying to understand one's posts. If readers don't comment, they're invisible. But I am wat...

The Demiurge or Evil Creator God in the Evangelion
Are there texts in any of the major recent reconstructions of the Evangelion (BeDuhn, Roth, Klinghardt) that clearly distinguish the Father to whom Jesus refers from the God of Israel of the Hebrew Bible/Jewish Scriptures/Old Testament, or distinguish Jesus' Father from the creator of the material w...

Re: Matthean posteriority: From "son of Mary", to "son of Joseph", to "son of the carpenter"
It is commonplace to argue that proto-Luke had no infancy narrative. Is the same argument commonplace in critical views of Matthew's narrative? Was there a proto-Matt with no infancy narrative (other than Mark)? It's not commonplace, but I imagine someone has argued that Matthew originally circulat...

Re: Matthean posteriority: From "son of Mary", to "son of Joseph", to "son of the carpenter"
Oh, on other thing: why do you consider 'son of the carpenter' awkward? Might this phrasing seem awkward, given my Markan expectations? It might seem awkward to you if you begin with the assumption that Mark 6.3 is the context in which to interpret Matt 13.55. But suppose Matt presumes and audience...

Re: Matthean posteriority: From "son of Mary", to "son of Joseph", to "son of the carpenter"
I'm on the fence on this one. I think Farrar hypothesis (Lukan posteriority) might be easier this time. Perhaps Matthew kept Mark's words, but changed Mark's focus. The result is awkward (son of the carpenter). Luke smoothed out Matthew's awkwardness (son of Joseph). Farrer has an easier time on th...

Re: Klinghardt and the Question about Fasting
We do not have one text that says John is scandalized and another that does not. [ but we have one text that says that Jesus "blesses him only under the condition that he 'takes no offense at me'" and a text that makes anonymous and absolutely generic the object of the blessing (Matthew 1...

Re: Klinghardt and the Question about Fasting
Ignoring totally and entirely the fixation by Kunigunde on the marcionite priority as evidence (!) of the historical Jesus, I disagree with Ken also when he quotes Goodacre: In his first reference to Occam in the book, he wrote: On the [old] paradigm we might have hoped that Q would preserve for us...

Re: Does the lost Gospel Q Exist? | Dr. James McGrath Vs Dr. Mark Goodacre
I may be able to shed some light on how Goodacre thinks Occam's razor ought to be used. He (and I) are heavily influenced by Michael Goulder, who used the term several times in his book Luke: A New Paradigm (1989). Goulder took the term paradigm from Thomas Kuhn, and he argues for a new paradigm (Lu...

Re: Does the lost Gospel Q Exist? | Dr. James McGrath Vs Dr. Mark Goodacre
We are compelled to believe in the existence of Mark, Matthew and Luke because we have manuscripts. Their existence is therefore demonstrable. We do not have manuscripts of Q. The existence of Q is deduced from the shared material in Matthew and Luke that they could not have taken from Mark AND the...
