I can fully appreciate that Pontus Pilate was used for more allegorical symbolism for the Gospel(s) writer(s). His historicity is simply a convenient utility as well.

Re: Further evidence that Ignatius faced old deniers of the historicity of Jesus
Hey Joseph, Glad to see you back! Cheers DCHindley! It's good to be back. Overall I will say I have reluctance in trying to determine how people two thousand years ago thought. I'm not saying Giuseppe's reading is wrong in and of itself per say, but that from my narrow perspective he does seem to a...

Re: Further evidence that Ignatius faced old deniers of the historicity of Jesus
Giuseppe, are you saying that Ignatius is a witness to people who denied the historicity of Jesus? For one thing, if he is I don't see how that is an argument in favour of mythicism because the two, historicity and mythicism, are relatably different and demand two different categories of evidence to...

Re: Is *Ev a source of the Gospel of the Ebionites?
I'm not sure I'm following you. Paul thought that Torah observance was no longer necessary for Jews and calls himself Jewish, which makes his letters Jewish writings, and Marcion used them. And the Ebionite Matthew was a Jewish writing that was anti-sacrifice and largely unobservant, and I'm sugges...

Re: Is *Ev a source of the Gospel of the Ebionites?
I have serious reservations with following the timeline from any church father, especially Epiphanius. Not only is he writing in the 4th century, far removed from the scene of the crime, and he is not above making stuff up (like the Nazarenes antedating Christ). Might you be confusing Nazarenes (Ep...

Re: Is *Ev a source of the Gospel of the Ebionites?
That isn't what you said. Yes, it is. No it is not. You said: "So having access to and using a Jewish gospel wouldn't be unusual for Marcion (especially one that was largely anti-OT/anti-sacrifice)" The syntactic construction of this line reads that Marcion would use a Jewish Gospel that ...

Re: Enough Criticism!! Why the naked slutboy in Mark 14:51?
If the baptism theory is true then it tells us where “dying with Christ” begins: when Jesus is betrayed and taken to the High Priest. Thank you, that is an insightful suggestion here. Last but not least, perhaps there is a connection to Mark 2:20-21: The days will come when the bridegroom is taken ...

Re: Flaw with Marcion priority theory?
Hey DCHindley. Long time. The only sources are the ones available to us. I am aware of no new discovery about Marcionism, so the only resources I have are church attestation and my own biased observations. Like you I think the Evangelion ascribed to Marcion is, if not fully fraudulent, then represen...

Re: The Source of Mark's Naked Youth Narrative?
I don't accept the idea that these minor prophets and lesser texts could have been the basis for a gospel narrative. Doesn't mean I am right. I am just skeptical. Joseph was iconic. Are you thinking that the writer had in mind a more philosophical exegesis? I was reading a book that mentioned somet...
