Re: The Date of Marcion
Tertullian wrote in "The Prescription against Heretics": http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/tertullian11.html Where was Marcion then, that shipmaster of Pontus, the zealous student of Stoicism? Where was Valentinus then, the disciple of Platonism? For it is evident that those men ...

Re: Any pre-325 CE writings where Jesus' historicity was doubted?
Again in this case, most of the comment exploring the interpretation also came from me at the time. Likewise, it can be discussed, but I don't know if I would defend what I wrote then. Yes, there are no doubt there are texts that people can point to (which they have done in this thread) where the i...

Re: What is implied if Jesus' historicity was not doubted?
A possible exception to this rule is Orpheus, whom apparently Aristotle supposedly doubted existed. In On the Nature of the Gods , Cicero stated that Aristotle claimed Orpheus never existed at all, though such a position is not found in the extant works of Aristotle. Aristotle tells us that there n...

Re: Any pre-325 CE writings where Jesus' historicity was doubted?
I would just add, likewise, that even without such biases in the documentary record, we also don't find examples of people claiming that the Sibyls never existed either, or really hundreds or thousands of figures which it is ow widely assumed, never existed. It's relevant to mention in this context...

This reference to Cerinthus together alongside Simon, "the false apostles," could indicate in favor of an early date for him.Peter Kirby wrote: ↑Sun Mar 24, 2024 1:11 pmOn further reflection, this is a fair point.billd89 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 20, 2023 6:46 pm The Epistle of the Apostles written about 160 AD would establish the personage as historical

Re: The Date of Marcion
When do we date Marcion? Which of the reports of the events of his life, which come to us through hostile patristic authors, are reasonably accurate and when did they take place? I once wrote this. I realize this isn't a direct response to the question of whether Marcion was behind everything, but ...

Re: Any pre-325 CE writings where Jesus' historicity was doubted?
Leaving Giuseppe's example aside, are there any examples of texts expressing doubt of the historicity of Jesus I doubt that there are any such examples. But I can mention a couple places where the discussion has cropped up before. how mythicists are judged Here, Irish1975 provided a translation of ...
