Re: Acts of the Pagan Martyrs - an Anti-Roman genre

Speaking of "martyrs" by fire, how can any of us ever forget the blessed Peregrinus Proteus?

Re: Ehrman's "How Jesus Became a God" is now out.

^Like most scholars I read, I find myself in agreement with Ehrman on some points, indifference / unknown on others, and disagreement on others. Although I tend to see Ehrman's reasoning as fairly sound most of the time. And this project in particular I found to be a good resource for exploring wha...

Re: "Christos" as reverse abbreviation for "archiereus megis

Hey Leucius, Do you know of a high-res, contemporary photo of that "Isu Chrestos" (Marcionite) inscription? There are a number of alleged early Christian-related inscriptions on statues, monuments, etc. that (magically!) have not survived in physical form. Whether we are talking about &quo...

Hey! no need to be sarcastic (and OK, maybe I was too - fair enough :cheeky: ).

But seriously, do you read Bart E's reasoning and think "Yeah, that makes sense." ?

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?

'primary sources' has a defined meaning (bolding added - tm) ; it is often used incorrectly. Best it is used correctly, or another term such as 'earliest mention', or 'first mention' is used if the information is not contemporaneous :problem: OK, so what, exactly, would that 'correct' defined meani...

Re: Ehrman's "How Jesus Became a God" is now out.

For anyone interested, this project by Ehrman is now available as a Great Courses (aka The Teaching Company) video lecture series. 24 half-hour lectures. http://www.thegreatcourses.com/tgc/courses/course_detail.aspx?cid=6522 I've watched/listened to most of the Great Courses lectures on Judaism and...

Pythagorean Mythicism (i.e., did Pythagoras exist?)

Question: Was Pythagoras a historical personage? (To put my question in context: I (personally) believe it is rational to assume the following are historical figures: Socrates, Democritus, Plato, Aristotle, Alexander the Great, Epicurus, Julius Ceasar, Pontius Pilate, Philo, Seneca Jr, Josephus, Ta...

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?

There are plenty of primary sources; its just what each is a primary source for. There's plenty of primary sources for early-Christian from say the end of the 2nd C but, to my knowledge, no primary sources for the claims of Christianity. Wait a second, am I the only one here who takes for granted t...

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?

By way of example, my understanding is the earliest source-document for Josephus (or maybe just Antiquities of the Jews ) is an 11th century one. (I did a quick google search now but can't find reference to it; I did confirm that a couple of yrs ago). Hardly a primary source for 1st C history. add,...
