Re: 1 Thessalonians 2:13-16

We have zero textual evidence, therefore not an interpolation. William O. Walker discusses 1 Thessalonians 2:13-16 on page 210-220 of his Interpolations in the Pauline Letters . On this pages Walker discusses 8 sorts of evidence for interpolation: • Text-Critical Evidence • Contextual Evidence • Li...

Re: 1 Thessalonians 2:13-16

IMO the cesure between the original Pauline text and the work of an interpolator lies between verse 13 and 14. Verse 13 speaks about the opposition between the ‘logos of men’ and the ‘logos of God’, which touches the core of Paul’s mission: to propagate a ‘message of God’ which is diametrically oppo...

. Tom Dyskstra on 'Q' - . ... the Apostle [Paul] records almost nothing of his Lord’s life and sayings 40 ... Some scholars postulate the existence of a written document they call Q which preserved a substantial series of Jesus’ sayings, and which might have been written down before Mark. 41 Accord...

Re: The Shepherd of Hermas

It might be worth noting that this is another early text that Earl Doherty believes was written by Christians with no historical Jesus in mind. From his "Jesus: Neither God Nor Man", pages 270-272: This writer is rooted in Hellenistic-Jewish mythology with its picture of a heaven in which...

Re: Incarnation (or the lack thereof) in the Philippian hymn (revisited).

At one specific moment in the history of 1st century CE Palestine there was a visible bidirectional staircase to/from heaven. When the Romans destroyed Jerusalem by fire, a huge column of smoke rose high into the sky above Jerusalem, topped by an also enormous smoke cloud. This staircase could be us...

More historical clues in Ascension of Isaiah

In a recent thread I discussed Ascension of Isaiah (AoI) 2:7-3:1 which IMO gives a veiled description of the last resistance of the Jews in the war of the Jews against the Romans. That I only discussed this small part of AoI might give the impression that this is the only historical allusion in this...

Re: Incarnation (or the lack thereof) in the Philippian hymn (revisited).

Great work, Ben. As IMO there are two layers in Paul’s letters, an authentic ‘anonymous and future Christ’ layer and an interpolated post-Pauline ‘Jesus’ layer, what Talbert writes in the third line of your quote drew my attention: Philippians 2:6–11, however, is a non-Pauline hymn . I would specify...

Re: New Testament -- which are the mythicist texts? Analysis of Carrier OHJ

Out of interest, why do you believe the information was encrypted? Why not give clear details? The information was encrypted because the authors wanted their message - and themselves - to survive in a hostile Roman environment. The Essene messianic movement was extremely anti-Roman, they fought not...

Re: New Testament -- which are the mythicist texts? Analysis of Carrier OHJ

So the H texts fit the same pattern as the NT: vague statements around historicity, and removing just a couple of passages would more than likely turn them into M or M? texts. Thank you for your extensive reply. 'Removing just a couple of passages' to get texts in the desired category seems to be a...

Re: New Testament -- which are the mythicist texts? Analysis of Carrier OHJ

Key: 'M" = Mythicist text, i.e. a text written by a 'mythicist' Christian, i.e. the author didn't believe in a historical Jesus "H" = Historicist text, i.e. the author believed in an earthly Jesus who actually lived on earth. M? = Could have been written by a 'mythicist' Christian M?...
