Re: The Origins of Christianity
That's the problem, isn't it, Andrew? Paul never seems to place the crucifixion in a specific place or time period. Determining what Paul "likely" thought runs the danger of begging the question. Paul clearly understood the death of Jesus as something only recently known to have happened....

Re: The Origins of Christianity
The whole idea of the Christ being crucified by Romans, and his death being associated with the end of the Temple (torn curtain) and his tomb being a midrash on the destroyed first temple (Isaiah 22:16 -- tomb carved out of a rock) and him being mocked as a false messiah (such as emerged at the tim...

Re: 1 Cor 15:3-11 once again
For followers of this problematic passage, which I think is an interpolation, I have thrown together another analysis with at least one novel addition on Reddit , that of a chiasm in 1 Cor 15:1-34, which naturally only works without v.3-11. (See the above link for more detail.) Here's the basic chi...

Re: The Origins of Christianity
Christianity begins with the huge disaster of 70 AD.. Followed by a platonistic Greek-influenced apologetic: people might die. But it is now asserted that their dreams can live on. As immortal forms, gods, live on somehow. Invisibly. In heaven. To return again, perhaps, in revenge and correction. O...

Re: Is Mark a valentinian Gospel?
FWIW the Gospel of Truth maybe the nearest we will get to Valentinus in his own words; has clear allusions to Matthew and John and maybe Luke but probably not Mark.

Re: Did Jesus Baptise people?
If we regard Cassiodorus as based on Clement then he knew something like our John III.—COMMENTS ON THE FIRST EPISTLE OF JOHN. “That which was from the beginning; which we have seen with our eyes; which we have heard.” Following the Gospel according to John, and in accordance with it, this Epistle al...

Clement of Alexandria, as cited by John Moschus in Spiritual Meadow 5.176 (volume 3 of Otto Stählin, 196.21, fragment 6 of the Hypotyposeis ): Ναὶ ἀληθῶς ἐβαπτίσθησαν, καθὼς Κλήμης ὁ Στρωματεὺς ἐν τῷ πέμπτῳ τόμῳ τῶν Ὑποτυπώσεων μήμνηται. φησὶ γάρ, τὸ ἀποστολικὸν ῥητὸν ἐξηγούμενος τὸ λέγον «εὐχαριστ...

Mark 10.35-40: 35 James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, come up to Jesus, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” 36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37 They said to Him, “Grant that we may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your ...

Re: Papyrus Vindobonensis 2325.
According to the web page. The fragment comes across as a variant version of Mark (whether later than or earlier than canonical Mark is not clear). With one significant complication Matthew and Fayyum each have εν ταυτη τη νυκτι (on this night), which Mark lacks. However many manuscripts of Mark ar...
