Re: Evolution from/after the Septuagint
See the current sections Influence of Hellenistic Judaism and the next section ' Decline of the 'Hellenistai' and partial conversion to Christianity ' in Wikipedia, and the section on The First Book of Maccabees " held as canonical scripture by some Christian churches (including Catholic, Ortho...

Re: Re: Evolution from/after the Septuagint
I'm not advocating some 'monstrous Franken-Judaism'. I'm working on a preliminary hypothesis that a myriad of variants evolved from a number of factors over a number of generations, with the evolution of variants and development of apocrypha accelerating in the 1st C.

Re: Re: Evolution from/after the Septuagint
I probably should've referred to plural - the [dispersed] text s , translated and transliterated into various versions, in different dispersed communities; over several/many generations - " that I propose/postulate is 1. versions of the Septuagint in the first instance, then 2. the apocrypha th...

Re: Re: Evolution from/after the Septuagint
Nevertheless even with all this variation anyone with any knowledge of the Pentateuch knows that you can't get that much variation out of this text. When I was in Israel the last time, I had two conflicting obligations on the same sabbath evening. So you know what I did? I actually paid a cab driver...

Re: an example of the kind of thing to avoid
... Either Jesus existed, and we have no evidence for that; else he did not exist, and we do possess evidence that he did not ... There were lots of Jesuses at the time - Josephus lists ~19 (I think). A key issue might be whether any were the basis for aspects of the biblical character; Jesus of Na...

Re: Re: Evolution from/after the Septuagint
I think my thesis is clear - there was upheaval from the times of the Hellenism of Judaism (including the Maccabee Revolt) through to the end of the Roman-Jewish Wars (by which most Jews had been exiled or enslave or both): there would have been disruptions to may communities and religious orders, a...

Re: 'evolution' during/after the 2nd Century BCE
Yeah but that's the misunderstanding of Jewish law that white people always want to get around. huh? The same thing is found in Islam. You can't just make shit up. It's not a creative writing exercise. huh? There are precedents that are established and people have to obey otherwise they will quite ...

Re: Evolution from/after the Septuagint
OK, but the point is that there was the start of significant cultural change and, to a degree, upheaval. Particularly changes in literature: I think the apocrypha and pseudepigraphic apocalyptic literature had a lot more influence on the development of Christianity than has been generally acknowledg...

Normative Judaism, or evolution from/after the Septuagint?
[edited font colour and size to change emphasis] I have been intrigued by the influence of Hellenism on the Jewish culture 3rd to 1st C BCE starting increased diversity in Judaism - Hellenic Jews removed their marks of circumcision and repudiated the holy covenant First book of Maccabees; the only v...

Re: Gerd Lüdemann's works
MrMacSon, let's not forget to mention what Lüdemann is perhaps the most famous for: He got in trouble with his university for denying the resurrection of Jesus/for not being a Christian. He wasn't sacked but he basically was pushed to the side. One of the reasons why one should hesitate before acce...
