No one really knows why Josephus called them Essene?

Eisenman had this to say about the origin of the word ' Essene ' in his book titled: " James the Brother of Jesus and the Dead Sea Scrolls" . "Sectarian terminology thus tends to slide around a good deal, depending on who is doing the observing, what vocabulary he is employing, and wh...

Re: Was Jesus an Essene?

Of course this leads inevitability IMO back to the etymology of the Hebrew term 'Essenes.' Was Jesus a member of a pre-existent group of 'healers'? Or was Jesus the god - the angel of truth as you term it - that the community awaited to make a visitation to earth? You have too many questions to ans...

Re: Was Jesus an Essene?

No actually I am not saying that. Your quote actually speaks of "the Lord" doing all that from Isa 61. Look for yourself. It is decidedly odd which is why I asked if you thought the Essenes had some sort of doctrine of incarnation because without that they apply Isaiah 61 to a divine visi...

Re: Was Jesus an Essene?

Dead Sea Scrolls expert, Geza Vermes, was open to the theory that the early Christian community had a direct casual connection with the Essenes and copied certain organizational rules of the Essenes but were not part of the Essene community. " If so, it is likely that the young and inexperience...

Re: Was Jesus an Essene?

As always, I don't think we can ever really know with any confidence. But the hypothesis is tantalising. I would say he was probably Essene-like - something of a Jewish fundamentalist who thought the ruling Temple cult had become corrupt and that God was soon to intervene to smite worldly powers. T...

Re: Was Jesus an Essene?

Second of all the material in both derives from Isaiah 61 which we know was very important for the community in terms of some sort of theophany/messianic expectation: to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release fro...

" And the Lord will accomplish glorious things which have never been [He..] for He will heal the wounded, and revive the dead and bring good news to the poor. "...(4Q521) A Messianic Apocalypse. " Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: the dead are raised,...

Re: Was Jesus an Essene?

I would welcome a list of specialists in Qumranic studies who follow the Huller model. Well I mean there is a significant difference. The first is that Eisenman is an accredited scholar and I am not. He's gotten a degree and taught and deserves to have his ideas seriously considered. My ideas in ge...

Re: Was Jesus an Essene?

Eisenman's theories about the Qumran material have been thoroughly disproven by carbon dating and discredited by who, Huller and Spin? Do you really want to be embarrassed once again by the admitted discrepancies in the radio-carbon data? I would welcome a list of specialists in Qumranic studies wh...
