Added 3rd Philo source to citations about Judean sects
Well, I hate to add to perfection itself (uh huh) but I was formerly relying on De Jonge for my Philo citations. De Jonge does not include a translation of a work of Philo known as Hypothetica (aka Apology for the Jews), as this is preserved only as a citation of Philo in Preparation for the Gospel....

Re: Further evidence that Ignatius faced old deniers of the historicity of Jesus
Part of my problem is that I do not read Carrier, at all. Someone had cited the letter to the Tarsians in an earlier post, so I thought that might be it. According to my analysis of this epistle (posted several years ago) to the Philadelphians: 8.2) And I exhort you to do nothing out of strife, but ...

Re: Further evidence that Ignatius faced old deniers of the historicity of Jesus
Hey Joseph, Glad to see you back! I think what Giuseppe has in mind is this passage in The Epistle to the Tarsians: Chapter III.—The true doctrine respecting Christ. Mindful of him, do ye by all means know that Jesus the Lord was truly born of Mary , being made of a woman; and was as truly crucified...

Re: The Legend of James the Just and His Martyrdom
Going back to Hegesippus' Hebrew or Aramaic skills, the Hebrew word that Eusebius claims Hegesippus paraphrased as " Oblias " (ὠβλίας), would appear to be the Hebrew verb " יָבַל " ( yabal ) to bring, carry, lead, conduct. The Greek word I'd expect would be ὁδηγήσει ( hodegesei )...

Re: The Legend of James the Just and His Martyrdom
These links are probably out of date (harvested in 2007), but with regard to the sources that may lie behind all those variegated means of death that James was supposed to have suffered, hereare some sources I located then: 12/22/07 http://bcharchive.org/2/thearchives/showthread2a1c-2.html Jona Lend...

Re: Gospel priority
Ken, I'm afraid I will have to decline to continue this discussion. ... The intensity level of posts about Synoptic Problem, especially Q, is why I have never liked the tenor of Synoptic studies. PS: Ken, I will be reading up on the Synoptic Problem from the books you recommended, if only for my ow...

Re: Gospel priority
Ken, I'm afraid I will have to decline to continue this discussion. Not sure I agree with the direction the board seems to be going (more angry replies and all that goes with that). I have noticed that you have recently soured in your opinion of me, and maybe pressed one of your buttons. I guess I a...

Re: Flaw with Marcion priority theory?
Here is another rub to the question of priority: from what point of the sediment are we starting from for our excavation? ... For convenience sake, here is my headcanon: *first layer, 115ad-130ad, Marcionism 0.1: belief in a mystical translation into the body of the chrestus: only Pauline letters u...
