Re: Why Pilate (if Marcion comes first)

Interesting thoughts, Giuseppe. What caught my interest recently was how many early Patristic authors talk about the Acts of Pilate, which was apparently already in wide circulation in the mid-second century. Early Christians certainly perceived something important about his role in the salvation dr...

Re: Another thread about the gospel of Mark as a story.

Let me pull up a log to this virtual campfire… I too am a passenger on the ex-Evangelical boat. Grew up in Pentecostal churches in Western Canada (which caught the crazy fever around the time of the Toronto Airport "revival") and spent my entire schooling in the church school, which used c...

Re: Papyrus Vindobonensis 2325.

Interesting. And thanks to Ben Smith for keeping one of biblical studies' most useful websites online.

Are there any photos of the fragment? It's always been a bit of a problem that the cock doesn't actually crow twice in Mark.

Re: Blasphemy & the passion narrative before Mark.

There is also some affinity between Mark's statement and LXX Psalm 88(89):14, another Messianic psalm, which speaks of God's right hand of power.

Re: Blasphemy & the passion narrative before Mark.

Since I'm on a Robert Fowler kick, let me offer another viewpoint: the sentence "And you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven" is parenthetical and aimed at the reader, not the high priest. This is defended by pointing out that simi...

Re: Mark 16:9-20 as Forgery or Fabrication by Richard Carrie

Great comment, Solo. Robert Fowler constantly points out how Mark's Gospel is structured to show how even though the disciples are ostensibly on the inside, they are on the outside when it comes to understanding Christ, while it is outsiders who gain insider knowledge. The abrupt and shocking ending...

Re: Agrippa killed James the brother of John with the sword

It's possible that the merging of various traditions left apostolic history with too many Jameses, and Acts had to dispose of one. I count seven (I think) Jameses in the NT, and at least some of them are probably doubles of each other.

Tertullian and the Caesars

Tertullian, in An Answer to the Jews , attempts to correlate the dates of Jesus' death and the destruction of the Temple according to Danielic hebdomads, but he really fudges the math. Look at his list of Roman emperors (my comments in red): For, after Augustus who survived after the birth of Christ...
