What do we know about EC writers?

I've been trying to keep up with the discussions about the TF, which rely heavily on conjectures about what early Christian writer Hegesippus, Origen and maybe Clement of Alexandria may have written. In the process, I have collected English translations of what fragments exist, and matched them with...

Re: Origen 1, Scholars 0

I would go beyond Painter here and suggest that the theological justification for the delay in punishing Jerusalem for killing the Christ of God is already there in the story Hegesippus relates, and even that it is very plausibly the reason that James came to be called “the Righteous One” in the se...

Re: Does anyone have access to Taylor & Francis articles?

Yes, it's fine. I didn't turn up this article, but I did find this. http://www.academia.edu/2542254/Jesus_Refusal_To_Produce_a_Sign_Mk_8.11-13_ Peter, Jeffrey Gibson has written a whole book on the subject, drawing frequently from Linton's essay: Temptations of Jesus in Early Christianity (1995, th...

Re: James ...

[No, obviously he [SA/H] is right about that. I thought that was obvious enough, anyway, but I should have spelled it out. What's completely un-obvious is the idea that a name with a meaning, or with the meanings mentioned, " isn't a proper name ." The argument would then run: (1) If a 'n...

Re: History of the Jews in Babylonia (non Sabbath version)

Finally read through it as best I could. It is not especially long (under 250 pages), but the non-specialist is hit by a mountain of unfamiliar Hebrew/Aramaic/Persian technical terms (which are thankfully transliterated into English) and names (not always clear which names relate to which sage, as s...

Re: James ...

Well, I'm going by notes I wrote quite a while ago. 1. According to Hegesippus, James quotes Jesus, "I beseech Thee, Lord God our Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do," while he is being stoned. This detail is from 1 Apoc James (Codex Tchacos). 2. Hippolytus seems to repea...

In that list above 'Imma' isn't a proper name. It means 'Mommy' in Aramaic. And neither Mara nor Martha are names either. Lady (f of "Lord") or mistress. Perhaps it can be argued that Martha became a name in the fourth century I'm not sure if I should trust you or the authors of this lexi...

History of the Jews in Babylonia (non Sabbath version)

I recently bought the first volume of Jacob Neusner's five volume series of books named in the title of this thread. This volume, I think, was originally published by E J Brill in 1964. The other four came out between then and 1970. All five volumes were re-issued by Wipf & Stock as paperbacks i...

Re: St Paul and the meteor

It is a fascinating proposal - that Paul saw a meteor. Having researched the symptoms of retinal detachment, and the visual effects of low blood sugar, I sometimes think that one or more of the three versions of the story were caused by retinal detachment in conjunction in conjunction with a bout o...
