Re: A modern analogy to ancient Christian roots.

And while I figure it is referring to pagan practices, Barnabas 20 is at least addressed to Christians and warns against "murderers of children": But the way of darkness is crooked, and full of cursing; for it is the way of eternal death with punishment, in which way are the things that destroy the...

Re: The demiurge and not Herod (!) put the thorns and the robe on Jesus

It is worth pointing out that this extract comes from the epistle of Ignatius to the Philippians, universally acknowledged to be spurious and usually dated to century IV or later ha, even the 4th century is truly ancient and those opinions are essentially guesses. so, can't contain earlier material...

Re: More Proof Against Marcion was Rewritten More than Once

so you want you some Marcion, how about let the guy speak for himself? O wonder beyond wonders, rapture, power, and amazement is it, that one can say nothing at all about the gospel, nor even conceive of it, nor compare it with anything Quote apparently comes from a writer called Harnak from an old...

Re: A modern analogy to ancient Christian roots.

Pearse lists other sources besides (and in some cases possibly pre-dating) Epiphanius, at least regarding some orgy-type stuff (all of which can be clicked on and viewed if you go to the webpage). The sources, in chronological order, are: •The Pistis Sophia 147, 3rd c.? •The Second book of Jeu 43, ...

Re: A modern analogy to ancient Christian roots.

The movements, developments, and influences of various groups on and into other groups in both cases look similar to me, as well. In both cases, creative people inside the movement could draw upon inspirations from outside the movment. Early Christians, for example, could draw from pagan myths or f...

Re: Origen, the gospel of Thomas, and James the Just.

I think you are possibly misunderstanding Origen. I don't think he is claiming that all the apocryphal gospels he mentions are heretical in origin . Some clearly are regarded as written by heretics such as Basilides, but this does not seem to be true in all cases. I think Origen's point is that the...

Re: Origen, the gospel of Thomas, and James the Just.

While skimming through Origen this evening, I noticed the following: Origen, Homilies on Joshua 4.3: 3 .... But remember that it is written, “Those who draw near to me, draw near to fire” (= Thomas 82). .... Origen, Homilies on Jeremiah 27.3.7: 7 I have read elsewhere as if the Savior was speaking ...

Re: John was possessed by the spiritual Christ in the gospel read by Celsus

Incidentally, Stuart makes an interesting case somewhere (I forget where) that there is a reaction against the demiurge in the Marcan synoptic apocalypse: Mark 13.19: 19 For those days will be a time of tribulation such as has not occurred since the beginning of the creation which God created until...

Re: Psalm 22:16 is quoted in Odes of Salomon but without inferring from it a crucifixion

See http://gnosis.org/library/odes.htm This is Ode 28 As the wings of doves over their nestlings, and the mouths of their nestlings towards their mouths, so also are the wings of the Spirit over my heart. My heart continually refreshes itself and leaps for joy, like the babe who leaps for joy in his...

Re: The Canon

Is the longer ending of Mark 16:9-20 in the Canon or not? The Catholic Church says yes. Protestant translations that do not rely on the Alexandrian text (e.g. KJV) say yes. I assume the Orthodox churches say yes since it comes from the "Majority Text." Perhaps the question isn't meaningful today as...
