A. Bedenbender "Good news at the edge of precipice"

What a great day! I discovered a book by the German scholar and pastor Andreas Bedenbender "Frohe Botschaft am Abgrund: das Markusevangelium und der Jüdische Krieg" (Good news at the edge of precipice: the Gospel of Mark and the Jewish War), Leipzig, Evangelische Verlagsanstalt, 2013 The book seems ...

Re: Proofs That Jesus Existed

1. There was a guy who denied Jesus three times.
2. But then he had wept.
3. Therefore, Jesus existed.

Re: “High/Early Christology”: A Crack in the Foundations?

Over at the Review of Biblical Literature website there is nary a bad review of any of his books (I could not read the two or three in German). Reviewers praise his clarity and concise thinking ... Re: The quest for the historical Christian communities

This just makes me curious to know what can we know about the Christian communities within which the New Testament writings originated ? Hopefully more than the mere dass ("that they existed") to which German scholarship in Bultmann had retreated concerning the question of the historical Jesus. It'...

Re: "The Simontic Problem". "Mark's" Negative Casting of Pet

I am not sure he was mocking the pillars. Mark is more likely subtly implying they weren't perfect ( cf the consistent reporting of this idea in the early heretics from Irenaeus and Tertullian). Mark however attained perfection with his second gospel I wouldn't say that the mocking is the main func...

Re: Why There Is Not And Never Will Be Consensus

Hi Peter, I was up till 3. A.M. finishing giving out grades to my students for the semester. Reading and re-reading their papers, it was obvious that about half heard what I was saying all semester about the desirability of critical thought and about half didn't listen to a word. Its frustrating re...

Re: "The Simontic Problem". "Mark's" Negative Casting of Pet

I love the author of Acts. You can count on him  Acts 19.13-16 "Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.' Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva...

Re: Empty Tomb in Mark's gospel not written by original auth

Nevertheless Bernard has made a very strong case. Almost all points speak in his favour and I'm sorry that I haven't honored that. I'm a little bit obsessed by Mark and I hope that can excuse me. All aspects to argue against Bernard lay on the dark side of Mark as I would call it and that can't be i...
