Re: Matthew's gospel first written in Hebrew?

There is a simpler solution. Those citing Papias had no clue about the original language, and frankly didn't care. Their objective was to justify the binding order of the four gospels with Matthew first, before Mark. By saying he wrote in Hebrew helped give priority to Matthew, since it dovetailed ...

Re: The Original Romans 1:21f

I think this condemns the Jews for angel worship which is a familiar theme in the Preaching of Peter from the same period. The homosexuality nonsense was added later - probably because of the controversy surrounding Secret Mark. I think Jesus is referencing himself as the angel 'Man' (= ish) and th...

Re: 1 Thessalonians 2:13-16

The interpolated text (verse 14-16) is written after 70 CE, as verse 16b ‘But God’s wrath has come upon them at last!’ refers to the destruction of Jerusalem at the end of the war against the Romans. Paul’s career ended before the war. More likely IMO that the entire thing was written after AD 70, ...

Re: Why "Egypt" is "where also their Lord was crucified"

At least one manuscript has "our Lord" rather than "their Lord." Thus, the KJV: And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. My 27th edition of Nestle-Aland prefers "their.&q...

Re: Is it Fair to Say that Joseph of Arimathea Was Introduced to Prove the Empty Tomb Was Miraculous?

It is odd that someone who isn't a disciple is suddenly introduced into the gospel narrative - a 'respectable' Jew who has no discernible or implied connection to Christianity. Standard Christian apologetic thinking would (and probably has) put this down as a "proof" in their column, for ...

Re: Irenaeus Says that the Valentinians Used the Johannine Prologue Rather than the Gospel of John as Such

Irenaeus writes: Those, moreover, who follow Valentinus, making copious use of that according to John, to illustrate their conjunctions, shall be proved to be totally in error by means of this very Gospel, as I have shown in the first book. Since, then, our opponents do bear testimony to us, and ma...

Ethan wrote: Sat Jul 14, 2018 7:50 am Then maybe Josephine Quinn shouldn't write a book in a Phoenician derived alphabet.

The Old Testament is PHOENICIAN Literature.
The author isn't denying that people called themselves Phoenicians, or that there was a Phoenician alphabet.

Re: Did the pillars claim to be "Brothers of the Lord"?

Christians and Jews believe Phoenicians never existed. There's a new book by Josephine Quinn called "In Search of the Phoenicians" (Princeton) in which it's argued that there was no nation as such called "Phoenicia." The author asserts that the concept of a Phoenician nation onl...

Re: Who Do Scholars Say is a Fake Person in Christian Antiquity?

Christian scholars have no problem admitting that people in the Old Testament (Job, Daniel, Judith, Esther, Tobit, etc) were fictional, i.e. "fake."

But everybody in the New Testament is real. Don't question them.

In marketing this process is known as "protecting the brand."
