Re: Did Paul know Jesus?

You're asking a very interesting question here. I certainly don't have a definitive answer, but I would offer this in relation to your exegesis of Galatians 1:22 ("I was personally unknown, however, to the churches of Judea that are in Christ"). You take that to mean that Paul was unknown ...

Re: "The Simontic Problem". "Mark's" Negative Casting of Peter

A very interesting idea. I think remember Crossan proposing something like this in his reading of John 20 where Simon and the Unnamed Disciple run to the tomb. Not sure I buy the idea, but it's a thought. In terms of MK it seems to me that he is casting Simon in the most abysmal terms possible so th...

Re: The Roman civil war 68-69 CE and Nero’s suicide in Luke 11:17-18a

Hello FJV:

Thanks for your reply. I can see that you have put a great deal of work into your theory. I guess for me the bottom line is that I disagree with your basic assumption that the Gospels are encoded tracts.

All the best to you and good luck in your continued work.

Re: The Roman civil war 68-69 CE and Nero’s suicide in Luke 11:17-18a

Hello Charles; For openers this quote was quite funny. Kudos to you. I come to defend FJV, not to bury him. I have heard the theory that you and FJV propose and, while I can't say I agree with it, it is interesting. But, on the other hand, to be totally honest, I have to confess I haven't read much ...

Re: The Roman civil war 68-69 CE and Nero’s suicide in Luke 11:17-18a

I assume you're just floating an idea and looking for feedback rather than actually positing this as Luke's intended meaning of the text. Actually FJV is on solid ground: For God (Diuus Claudius) so loved the world that he gave his only "Begotten" son (Are there other types of sons? Yes! ...

Re: The Roman civil war 68-69 CE and Nero’s suicide in Luke 11:17-18a

I assume you're just floating an idea and looking for feedback rather than actually positing this as Luke's intended meaning of the text. If that's the case, it seems to me that you are reading far more into the text than it can sustain. I guess the major problem I see is that your exegesis is under...

Hurricane Florence and Pat Robertson

I'm sure everyone is aware of hurricane Florence, which, on Wednesday September 12, was a category 4 and expected to be a massive “storm of a lifetime”. What you may be less aware of is that on Monday, September 11, televangelist Pat Robertson prayed a “shield of protection” around the Virginia Beac...

Re: David Bentley Hart’s NT Translation "Recaptures the Awkward, Multivoiced Power of the Original."

Love Hart or hate him, you have to admit he's brilliant and arrogantly opinionated. Personally, I love him. I checked this translation on Amazon for a preview of Mark and, from what I saw, he does a great job of capturing mark's rustic kick-you-in-the-gut style. For instance, after Jesus heals the l...

Re: "those who were in the boat worshiped him": not Peter

Hello Giuseppe I think you have raised a very interesting point with this post. Here, in my very humble opinion, is what I think MT is saying in this pericope. This story is preceded by the beheading of John the Baptize and the feeding of the 5,000. It is followed by Jesus' healing of the sick in Ge...
