Re: Invention of Macrina the Younger?
We seem to have solid evidence of the existence of Macrina the Elder the grandmother of Basil Gregory of Nyssa and (if she existed) Macrina the younger. Given the widespread practice of naming children after their grandparents it is prima-facie plausible Basil and Gregory of Nyssa had a sister calle...

Re: Invention of Macrina the Younger?
It seems prima-facie improbable that Gregory Nazianzen and Gregory of Nyssa should collaborate on the invention of a fictional Macrina the supposed sister of Basil and Gregory of Nyssa. It may well be that much of what Gregory of Nyssa says about his sister is hagiography not history but that is ano...

Re: Every time Paul mentions Mark, he also mentions Luke
Can you give a source for Origen believing that Mark used Matthew please ?RandyHelzerman wrote: ↑Sun Apr 28, 2024 11:43 am
Yeah, Origin also thought that too. Astoundingly.I think you may be confusing Origen and Augustine.
Origen certainly held that Matthew was earlier than Mark but that is not the same thing.

Re: Timo S. Paananen's Dissertation on "Admissible Concealed Indicators"
[ However there is a general problem; claiming that Morton Smith composed the Mar Saba letter is prima-facie a startling claim and naturally encourages speculation, of varying degrees of plausibility and relevance about his motives and agenda. If however like many scholars e.g. Smith and Landau one...

Re: Every time Paul mentions Mark, he also mentions Luke
Since this is the only one you commented on, can I assume you agree with all there rest of the points :-) *chuckle* No you can't. Marcion is trying in good faith to prepare a critical edition of the original Gospel using Luke as a basis, then it is IMO plausible that he would be reluctant to remove...

Re: Implications of Marcion for early Christianity?
He became a Christian, by interacting with Christians. As this was the first generation of Christians, they *all* became christians by interacting with Christians! By the same place I mean "the Land of Israel." When you say "the Land of Israel" I wonder if you are having a simil...

Re: Clement and truthy-ness
There is a general issue here. The letter if authentic is intended to reassure Theodore of the truth of orthodox Christianity. However, its effect on Theodore is likely to be rather different.

Re: Timo S. Paananen's Dissertation on "Admissible Concealed Indicators"
To a limited extent I agree with Panaanen. Some of the arguments linking Morton Smith to the Mar Saba letter do appear flimsy. (After reading and enjoying Anglo-Saxon attitudes I do not believe it influenced in any way the author of the Mar Saba letter.) However there is a general problem; claiming ...

Re: Implications of Marcion for early Christianity?
Ken, one of the reasons Secret Mark can persuade about its authenticity is that it gives a detailed explanation about what Jesus went to do in Jericho (an explanation that is absent in Mark). Secret Mark clearly solves a problem in canonical Mark which troubles modern readers more than it apparentl...
