Re: The opening of Mark really Marcion's?

A nice example of a modern version of scholasticism here.

Re: Paul Needed to be a Persecutor

I have found myself agreeing with Clabeaux a lot. My conclusion is that the Marcionite text of Paul represents a stage of the letters at a point of time where revisions from many sects had been made, but the major Lukan redaction had not yet occurred. I think we can safely conclude that these texts...

Re: Interpreting Galatians 1:13-17 (3 possible readings)

But what is the basis for not including those verses? On multiple grounds. The first of which is that the verses are not attested in the Marcionite text, nor alluded to in the anti-Marcionite writings as a point of engagement with the Marcionites; whether it was there or not, it was probably a noth...

Re: Interpreting Galatians 1:13-17 (3 possible readings)

Actually in several Marcionite reconstructions, including Detering and also my own, verses 1:13-14 are not part of the reconstruction. My interlinear reads like this: Πρὸς Γαλατας To the Galatians 1:1 Παῦλος ἀπόστολος οὐκ ἀπ᾽ ἀνθρώπων οὐδὲ δι᾽ ἀνθρώπου Paul an Apostle not from men nor through man ἀλ...

Re: Key Points in Tertullian's On Going Use of Luke Against Marcion

"When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Baptismal scenes are absent from ...

Re: Key Points in Tertullian's On Going Use of Luke Against Marcion

I think you are finally catching on, not just to Marcionism, but Gnostic opinions. The Catholic/Orthodox presentation claims multiple high gods by their opponents, but in reality the division was over the properties of the high god. The Catholics gave the properties of creation and Jewish law giving...

Re: Does the writing of a gospel count as an anti-Roman action?

I'm not clear what these words mean: "... first thrown out is that the concept of the Law requiring sin-free officials to be carried out,...." Perhaps rephrase? Everyone knows PRC officials are corrupt. The CCP does not want that to be an impediment in any way to their executing the law a...

Re: Markus Vinzent's answer to Chris Albert Wells

The claim that Paul is not mentioned before the mid 2nd century requires late dates for both Clement to the Corinthians and the letters of Ignatius. (Also it is probable that Basilides was acquainted with Paul's letters.) Andrew Criddle Yes, and also for Irenaeus. I think nearly everything is shift...

Re: Does the writing of a gospel count as an anti-Roman action?

Every cult in Rome claimed it was the true one and others worshipped false or lesser gods and their prayers would not be heard. Christianity and Judaism were no different. There is a lot of evidence from the Decia persecution era documents and also Diocletian, that Christians and Pagans lived next d...
