And the Gospel of Mark sure looks like it's responding to a more Jewish, pro-12 Apostle/Disciple Gospel.

Interesting reference in the Shepherd, too: " the elders who preside over the church [τῶν πρεσβυτέρων τῶν προϊσταμένων τῆς ἐκκλησίας]" (Hermas, The Shepherd , Vision 2.4.3). That's one more of several you provided where president is used along side elder but it's elder that became the ecclesiastica...

To me, a big issue is that of the various officer positions, such a bishops, etc. that Paul mentions. It seems that many people take these to be Christian inventions, and thus signs of a mature or developed church structure. But I don't see this as the case.
