Re: Excerpts from Volkmar, 'The Religion of Jesus,' 1857

I'd say that they have overwhelming been portrayed as Jews. Portrayed? This is starting to remind me of the comedy sketch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APMu32sC2nM . Paul *self describes* as a Jew in Philipians, and we know it wasn't a geographic or cultural identity either, because he further st...

Re: γυμνὸς or γυμνοὶ in Clement's Letter to Theodore?

If there's something specific you're seeing here, you haven't explained. Hmmm...I've got to get better at remembering not to forget to put down what I'm thinking.... Well, as I understand it, the ambiguity is in determining whether the word ends in -αι or in -ας. The leftmost picture turns all of t...

Re: Excerpts from Volkmar, 'The Religion of Jesus,' 1857

Both Jesus and Paul were Jews. I'm with Jason BeDuhn on this one....neither Jesus nor Paul was inventing a new religion, because the very concept of a religion--as being a system of worship and morality which is distinct from your ethnicity--wasn't invented until Mani. Here's a video of him elaborat...

Re: The refusal of a sign as a Judaizing passage found in *Ev

I'm kinda mystified here at what you are trying to prove, and how you are trying to prove it.....I mean, I actually believe in Ev priority over Luke, but don't find these little snippets very convincing ;-) :-( Why not? Well, say its even true that asking for the sign was a very Jewish thang.....was...

Re: The refusal of a sign as a Judaizing passage found in *Ev

even in that case, *Ev was condemned to destruction because its only sin was the association with the marcionite interpretation . [/quote] Weeellll.....that and the Marcionites discouraged making lots of marcionite babies. Same fate of an ancient indoeuropean solar symbol. *chukle* how much better ...

Re: γυμνὸς or γυμνοὶ in Clement's Letter to Theodore?

And I am not convinced that image quality is a significant factor for the separate issue of the line 2 character. Are you saying we can't even achieve consensus about why we can't achieve consensus? :-) If it's not image quality, what is it? One factor on this separate issue is that there is a high...

Re: The refusal of a sign as a Judaizing passage found in *Ev

This is the problem with the gospels. Even *Ev is a receptacle of different theologies, therefore Marcion was not so free from partial compromises with the ideology of the his own opponents. Well, assuming that he wrote the Evangelion. Alternately, he just received a text, like virtually everybody ...

Re: γυμνὸς or γυμνοὶ in Clement's Letter to Theodore?

I think, for someone, the I.2 character could look prima facie as -αι. Do you guys have some better digitizations that we don't? Because the very fact that we cannot reach consensus on these issues proves to me that the photographs we've seen so far are too noisy to be of much use. What do you see ...

Re: What do we know about how early Christians construed “self-talk”, “inner speech”, “talking to oneself”?

Guys, I never said this was the first time in recorded history that anybody ever read something without taking aloud. But it is undeniable that it was the exception and not the rule until the late Middle Ages. This book connects the custom of putting a space between words with the rise of silent rea...
