Re: John of Gischala "was scandalized" at the news about Josephus and Jesus ben Sapphat
I think this is barking up the right tree. Very interesting Giuseppe, even if nobody is commenting. Yes, Jesus ben Sapphat underlies much of the Jesus in Galilee stories of the Gospels, and John of Gischala underlies the Johannine-Christian "John" figure reflected in some of the "John...

Re: John the Baptist, redivivus of a 2015 article
Side note: Greg, you may find interesting this point about Capernaum in Josephus. Very interesting Giuseppe! I think you are right! It is a story version of Jesus being credited with healing the injured Josephus in Capernaum. This is when Josephus is still fighting the Romans, like Jesus ben Sappha...

Re: John the Baptist, redivivus of a 2015 article
Peter Kirby—I have not followed all the discussions on the Ant 20 James passage but I wonder if the following explanation could be a possibility on the table. Assume Hegesippus draws from Papias on the real tradition of James the Just’s death actually occurring during the Revolt. ... Side comment t...

Re: John the Baptist, redivivus of a 2015 article
Giuseppe -- and maybe consider reading the NT letter of Hebrews as an apologia of Jesus supporters to having an Aaronic-ancestry claim discredited and gone?

Re: John the Baptist, redivivus of a 2015 article
Peter Kirby -- thanks. If Hegesippus was distinct from Papias I wonder if he has more Papias in his material than has been commonly recognized. It was due to your earlier on Hegesippus that caused me to revisit the issue of Papias's dating, and I ended up concluding the more common "early"...

Re: John the Baptist, redivivus of a 2015 article
Giuseppe, I think your ben Damnaeus quote explanation is probably correct on the name. I wonder if it is related to the allegations in the Jesus traditions of scandal in Jesus’s birth or paternity.

Re: Agamemnon Tselikas’ Handwriting Analysis Report Did Morton Smith Forge "Secret Mark"?
In the last week of August 1991 I newly arrived to Cornell in Ithaca, New York to begin a graduate program in Near Eastern Studies. By total coincidence I met and talked with a one year contract term visiting professor in the department, Seth Schwartz, about a day or two before he left Ithaca after ...
