Re: Garrow's $1000 Challenge

There's something "off" about being given a $1000 to post something yet still keeping what you post behind a paywall. Ehrman is so not into open or public access of information. Something .... what's the word, .... some might say "American"(?) about it? Probably not the right word. Richard Stallman...

Re: Was John the Baptist invented?

But you have cited a biblical story. I mean: in the real History, how much is probable that the entire "people" could have thought something of similar? In the Roman history, for example, I know that the consul Flaminius was considered guilty of blasphemy against the gods and as such was defeated b...

Re: Was John the Baptist invented?

Were there other cases where the defeat of x is explained by the people as the God's punishment for an action done by x against some y? It's not strange, from a Jewish perspective. 2 Kings 24 24 During Jehoiakim’s reign, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon invaded the land, and Jehoiakim became his vass...

Re: Was John the Baptist invented?

Reasons in support of historicity: 1) Josephus seems genuine about him, afterall. 2) utility of a historical figure as witness to a mythical "human" Jesus distinct from the spiritual Christ 3) There are references (e.g., in Mark, John, in Acts) that suggest a competing sect that acknowledged only t...

Re: Carrier and the ideal Hurtado about (still) the Logos-Jesus

Carrier clearly hasn't read enough of the exegesis of Hurtado, or he'd choose his words a little more carefully. Point 1: Hurtado now claims Philo doesn’t identify the Logos as an archangel. Yet Philo explicitly does. I quote him doing so. In the book. So here we see Hurtado keeps putting his foot i...

Re: Carrier versus Hurtado about what there was in the mind of Philo

However, Philo does indeed call the Logos an “archangel”. Philo writes Don: Yes, in another of his writings (NB: contra Carrier, not in the De Confusione passage), Philo can refer to the Logos by the labels you cite. When presented with the passage where Philo calls the Logos an archangel -- a fact...

Re: Carrier versus Hurtado about what there was in the mind of Philo

For Philo, is the Logos really a separate ontological being? For Philo, is the Logos really an archangel? In case it isn't clear, so far I have not tried to answer these questions. My conclusions, as stated, require neither a 'yes' or 'no' to either. What I will say now, if it helps, is that it is ...

Re: Carrier versus Hurtado about what there was in the mind of Philo

So for you, Philo describes the Logos as really a separate ontological being I did not say that. I did not say that Hurtado was wrong about this not "really a separate ontological being" wording. I haven't said that Hurtado is right or wrong about the not "really a separate ontological being" state...

Re: Carrier versus Hurtado about what there was in the mind of Philo

For my notes, what did Carrier actually write here? Just going off of memory, but I seem to recall that Carrier wrote that Philo wrote about a celestial being named Jesus. I recall it because I looked into it at the time and could find no corroboration for it. This is I think Hurtado's bone of cont...
