Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries

"If YHWH is an abbreviation, then all ancient Hebrew words are abbreviations before the Masoretes added vowel points." Yah, I was wrong there. "I don't know how a coin which clearly shows the name "Elizabeth II" has any relevancy with the Nomina Sacra?" The NS cover mo...

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries

Hey Jax :)
all good here, been doing other areas of history.

A few more examples of ancient abbreviations -

The mysterious 'E' at the Temple at Delphi.
The Spartan 'L' on their shields.
Even 'YHWH'.

Re: Some Observations on the Nomina Sacra of the First Three Centuries

Basically, the suggestion is that the abbreviations of what may be considered the most important names, titles, and related nouns of early Christianity run parallel, both in form and in effect, to the abbreviations of the names and titles of important Roman officials in inscriptions and especially ...

Re: Paul, his rivals, and the crucifixion.

Gday Ben :) Interesting analysis. I note a little latter former glitch here : If the differences between his own gospel and that of his rivals included the acceptance or rejection both of circumcision and of the crucifixion, why does Paul seem only to harp on the former? Why does he not make a point...

Re: Deconstructed Letters of Paulos

Gday Jax, Hope you're well :) I think that 1Co. 14:34-35 is all but a slam dunk for most critical scholars now days. Haven't seen you around for a while; good to see you posting. What do you think of my list? Well, I pop in for a gander from time-to-time, but I've mostly moved on to other topics of ...

Re: Deconstructed Letters of Paulos

Gday Ben,

Thanks for those :) I thought it was worth a mention for anyone who may not have seen it, due to it's direct relevance on 1 Cor. 14:34-35. Seems like Payne has looked into that passage in depth.

I just found that distigme-obelos in my copy of 'B' - how thrilling.

Re: Deconstructed Letters of Paulos

Gday Jax and everyone :) Did you see this relevant article by Philip B. Payne from New Testament Studies ? He calls that little marker doodad a ' distigme-obelos '. Vaticanus Distigme-obelos Symbols Marking Added Text, Including 1 Corinthians 14.34–5 Abstract : "The two-dot-plus-bar ‘distigme-o...
