Re: Why "THE uprising" and not "A uprising"?

G., Take a look at Jesus and the Zealots by S G F Brandon (1967). He has an extensive section on this subject. DCH, you seem completely ignore the Couchoud's explanation of the Barabbas episode, whereas I know too much well the best case for a seditious (historical) Jesus (especially the Bermejo-Ru...

Re: Why "THE uprising" and not "A uprising"?

G., Take a look at Jesus and the Zealots by S G F Brandon (1967). He has an extensive section on this subject. It is not available online, but it is available as a used book for about $10 US at ABE Books. Despite being slightly out of date (eg., he uses the term "Zealot" to cover all 4th philosophy ...

Re: P. Oxy 405 as a fragment of Irenaeus A.H.

MrMac, That kind of variance from what the Latin version of AH would suggest the underlying Greek text should be, was why I was at first skeptical that this was really a fragment from AH, and not some apocryphal gospel or other Christian related commentary that was floating around in antiquity. Look...

Re: The male inhabitants of Gennesaret or its people?

It is hard to tell whether they were doing so (and this must have been a major undertaking) out of concern for the sick or they were being pragmatic : "If this Jesus fellow really can heal the sick, with some effort we can clear out all the sick and crippled who are draining our limited resources! ...

Re: The male inhabitants of Gennesaret or its people?

There are two versions of the ‘healing of the sick in Gennesaret’ story in the gospels, a shorter version in Matthew and a longer in Mark. The stories go as follows, with the corresponding content opposite each other (my emphasis): Matthew 14:34-36 Mark 6:53-56 (34) And when they had crossed over, ...

Re: P. Oxy 405 as a fragment of Irenaeus A.H.

Very interesting. Thank you David. Of course (TM) I found errors. I have gone back and fixed the OP. I wanted to also attach JPGs of the transcriptions and the two extracts from Harvey, but something is wrong with the way the board software is storing attachments (you can't delete them, and as you ...

Re: Thomas Scott - Irenaeus Never Existed

Those damn authors of the DSS never dated anything. Eisenman and Wise, Dead Sea Scrolls Uncovered , p. 119: "...But what is unique about these fragments is that they belong to a select group of Qumran documents mentioning identifiable historical personages, as the Nahum Commentary does with Anitioc...

P. Oxy 405 as a fragment of Irenaeus A.H.

How P. Oxy 405 became identified as a fragment of Irenaeus Against Heresies, bk 3, sect 2-3: The Oxyrhynchus Papyri Part 3 405 (1903, p10 ) 405-406. Theological Fragments. Plate I (405 and 406 verso). We here group together fragments of two different theological works, which we have not been able to...

Re: Thomas Scott - Irenaeus Never Existed

It’s a fragment of Against Heresies. I realise that. I would like to know if it has been specifically dated and, if so, on what basis. I have recently been wondering if paleography of early Christian texts such as P Oxy 405 is a biased methodology b/c it is both self-referencing and based on assume...

Re: Was Romans chapter 13, versus 1-7 found in Marcion's copy of Romans

I am aware that Paul's Christology is often seen as a response to emperor worship and their claim to divinity. . Pray tell .... or Is this the 'tell' ? - ... Well, what does "this" tell you? To me the Christology does not appear to be a reaction to emperor worship, but the natural development of th...
