Re: The closing chapters of 1 Clement

Hi all, I notice that the Roberts-Donaldson translation of 1 Clement (found on EarlyChristianWritings.com ) concludes at chapter 59, whereas Lightfoot and Hoole's goes all the way to chapter 65. I think I recall reading somewhere that some have proposed the final 5 chapters are a later interpolatio...

Re: Three different reasons to kill Jesus (if you are one of the 'Rulers of this Age')

In the classic sense, demons were spiritual beings under direction of the creator God the same as angels. The demons were the "elementals" commanded by angels, doing the heavy work like cause or heal sicknesses, control weather, etc., and angels were in turn under the command of the creator God, dir...

Re: Jörg Rüpke on early Christianity in 'Pantheon: A New History of Roman Religion'

In the introduction to Dieter T. Roth's article, "Marcion’s Gospel and Luke: The History of Research in Current Debate" (JBL 127, no. 3, 2008, pp 513–527), he says: [513]The issue of the relationship between Luke and Marcion’s Gospel has been revived recently in several discussions of Marcion and Lu...

Re: Jörg Rüpke on early Christianity in 'Pantheon: A New History of Roman Religion'

It's a funny case, as you [as an amateur] probably wouldn't know from [Trobish's] published articles that you can easily download, but he gave this lecture/sermon hybrid in some church three years ago, where he gets very clear on his thoughts regarding this issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nm...

Re: Jörg Rüpke on early Christianity in 'Pantheon: A New History of Roman Religion'

The other point of contention is, of course, [Rüpke's] adaptation of what is described as Markus Vinzent's ideas about the origin of Christianity. It's really hard to judge a book from reviews, so I won't. However, though the "Marcion first" hypothesis is definitely not the leading hypothesis of Ch...

Re: Jörg Rüpke on early Christianity in 'Pantheon: A New History of Roman Religion'

Other important recent work on these same figures, for example by Dieter Roth and Markus Bockmuehl, which undercuts the most sensational reconstructions, is damned to the oblivion of missing bibliography. -- I'm not sure Dieter Roth and Markus Bockmuehl offer reconstructions of early Christian orig...

Re: Jörg Rüpke on early Christianity in 'Pantheon: A New History of Roman Religion'

I'm not sure if you were referring to me or to JohnT, but I will cite one of the less glowing reviews: ... Early Christianity winds in and out of the last chapters of the book. But, unless it is your professional obligation to stay current with the latest one-upmanship of hypercriticism in the fiel...

Re: Jörg Rüpke on early Christianity in 'Pantheon: A New History of Roman Religion'

If Jörg Rüpke any or any myticist has any real evidence other than wishful thinking I would like to see it. To try to connect Mithraism to the origin of Christianity is just absurd, nay dishonest. Prof. Rüpke is one of the worldwide leading experts on ancient Roman religion, which means I wo...

["Irenaeus 1.24:] Wherefore he did not himself suffer death, but Simon, a certain man of Cyrene, being compelled, bore the cross in his stead; so that this latter being transfigured by him, that he might be thought to be Jesus, was crucified, through ignorance and error, while Jesus himself receive...

Re: Why Did Jesus Descend Into Hell?

That is a good question. I cannot offer my uniquely wrong POV as I have not developed one (yet). I would think that as early christians went looking for proof texts for their brand of "peshers" to explain just how Jesus came to die and what that meant for the end-age, they came upon these other, pre...
